Man wanted murder to look like mauling imprisoned

MALONE, N.Y. (AP) — A New York man who plotted to make his ex-girlfriend‘s death look like a bear mauling is going to prison for trying to hire someone to kill her in a staged car crash.

Franklin County prosecutors say Clyde Gardner gave up on his first plan: He’d kill a bear, skin it and wear the pelt while using its claws to kill the woman as she was taking out her garbage.

An acquaintance alerted police after Gardner asked the man to kill the ex-girlfriend and gave him advice on how to stage a car accident.

Gardner is a 57-year-old junkyard owner from Malone and an experienced demolition derby driver. He pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge in July. He was sentenced Wednesday to five to 15 years in prison.

Ford Reiterates Plan to Hire 7,000 in U.S. By End of 2012

September 29, 2011, 9:36 AM EDT

By Tony Jordan and Anna Mukai

(Updates with January announcement in third paragraph.)

Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) — Ford Motor Co. Chief Executive Officer Alan Mulally reiterated the automaker’s plan to add 7,000 jobs over the next two years in the U.S. as it expects the world’s largest economy to avoid another recession.

Ford is discussing adding as many as 10,000 jobs in the U.S. in negotiations with the United Auto Workers union on a new four-year contract, according to three people familiar with the talks. Mulally, who was in Thailand today, declined to comment on the progress of discussions with the UAW.

Ford announced Jan. 10 plans to hire 4,000 factory workers and 750 engineers this year and 2,500 hourly workers next year. Some of the hiring was to support Ford’s development of battery- powered cars, the company said at the time. The automaker is now looking for new ways to expand employment, Mulally said.

“We are actually going to add nearly 7,000 new jobs in the U.S. over the next two years,” Mulally, 66, said in a group interview. “And you can imagine that with that backdrop that the attitude of everybody is how do we continue to make progress, because what we all care about is growing the business and providing great jobs and great careers.”

Still Seeing Expansion

The second-largest U.S. automaker’s plan to recruit more workers comes as President Barack Obama seeks to rally support for his $447 billion proposal to boost hiring. With unemployment stuck at 9.1 percent last month and the economy growing at a 1.3 percent annual rate in the second quarter, jobs will be a central issue as Obama campaigns for re-election in 2012.

“We’re still seeing economic expansion,” Mulally said. “It is relatively less than we’ve had following previous recessions. But clearly the recession we went through is the worst that we’ve had since the Depression, so we’re very encouraged by the recovery.”

Mulally was in Thailand to attend the production debut of Ford’s Ranger pickup at a local plant.

Ford shares fell 1.9 percent to $9.93 in New York Stock Exchange composite trading yesterday. The shares have fallen 41 percent this year.

While growth in Europe has slowed due to the region’s debt crisis, expansion in the Asia-Pacific region remains “substantial,” Mulally said. Increasing Ford’s business in Asia is part of the CEO’s wider plan to boost annual global sales 50 percent to 8 million vehicles by 2015.

Market Share

Ford’s U.S. market share rose to 16.8 percent this year through August from 16.7 percent last year, according to researcher Autodata Corp. Under Mulally, the Dearborn, Michigan- based carmaker has been diversifying its model lineup, including adding the Fiesta subcompact.

“The U.S. industry has been through its worst, and Ford is optimistic about the auto market’s recovery,” said Ashvin Chotai, London-based managing director for Intelligence Automotive Asia. “Ford’s financial situation is very good, with the restructuring and partial recovery. The hiring plan seems flexible and realistic, too.”

Mulally, who has headed Ford since September 2006, led the company to earn $9.28 billion in the past two years after $30.1 billion in losses from 2006 through 2008. The automaker borrowed $23.4 billion in late 2006, putting up all major assets including its blue oval logo as collateral. That helped Ford avoid bankruptcy and boost U.S. market share the last two years.

UAW Talks

The discussion about creating 10,000 jobs is part of high- level negotiations between Ford and UAW President Bob King over wages, benefits and employment gains in the new contract and is still subject to change, said the people, who asked not to be identified revealing internal deliberations.

“Job reduction in 2009 was severe, so Ford must be restoring the headcount from then,” Chotai said.

Ford, Toyota Motor Corp. and General Motors Co. are among automakers using Thailand as a global production hub due to tax incentives and trade arrangements that grant access to Southeast Asia’s 592 million consumers.

Ford has invested $1.3 billion in Thailand in the past three years. The carmaker signed a 15.5 billion-baht ($497 million) loan agreement in July with three Thai banks to fund a new passenger car manufacturing plant in the eastern province of Rayong.

Ford said earlier this month it would add eight models in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations over the next five years as vehicle sales increase.

Review Roundup: Car-Sharing Services

Photo: Adrian Gaut

It’s never been easier to be carless in the city. Not because of a boom in public transit, but because of car-sharing services, which make owning a vehicle akin to paying for a nanny instead of hiring the occasional babysitter.

The Basics

Where do the cars live?
Established companies like Zipcar have parking lots sprinkled throughout urban areas, while newer P2P services connect drivers with private owners (a nice way to make extra money, given that the average car sits unused for 22 hours a day). Most systems use smartphones, GPS tracking, social networks, RFID cards, and the real-time web to connect drivers with vehicles, often within minutes.

How does the system work?
Drivers typically sign up online for memberships, often choosing a subscription plan or a monthly minimum payment. Reservations take a few taps on a phone, and unlocking the car can be as easy as touching a smartcard to the windshield. Usually keys and a gas card will be waiting inside the vehicle, though some car-sharing networks, especially P2Ps, require an in-person key exchange.

What about Insurance?
The services in our review all include rental coverage, which varies by company. A 2011 California law called AB 1871 protects car owners in P2P networks by stating that the owner’s insurance is not liable during a rental period as long as the P2P service has coverage and the owner’s rental revenue does not exceed the expense of owning and operating the vehicle. Several other states are considering similar laws.

Buying advice

AAA estimates that the average American who owns a small sedan and drives it 10,000 miles a year spends $5,860 per annum on car ownership. For that, you could log up to 20 hours a week through a car-sharing outfit.

But many providers limit each rental to three or four days and start charging extra fees after 160 miles per day. So for errands and the occasional weekend getaway, a car-sharing setup can save you time and money. For longer commutes or out-of-town trips, you’re better off buying a car or using a traditional rental agency.

How We Tested

We evaluated standard providers Zipcar and City CarShare and P2P services RelayRides and Getaround on midday errands, rush-hour commutes, and evening outings on the streets of San Francisco.

Priceline Moves Into The Daily Deals Space

By Sarah Perez

Travel discounter Priceline.com (PCLN) is launching a new daily deals service aimed at helping users find cheap hotel rooms. (Maybe it would be more accurate to call it a “nightly” deals service.)

Starting today, same-day offers for heavily discounted hotel rooms will become available in Priceline’s Hotel Rental Car Negotiator app at 11 a.m. local time and can be instantly booked up until 11 p.m., or until the deal sells out.

To be clear, Priceline isn’t using the group-buying model of Groupon here, which requires that a certain number of people sign up for a deal in order for it to “tip” (meaning become active.) But it certainly is tapping into the instant gratification from discount fervor that services like Groupon (GRPN), Living Social and others offer.

The deals will show up in the mobile app when a traveler does a search for hotel rooms with a check-in date of “today.” When they buy a deal, they can choose to check in that day, and stay up to 4 nights at discounts of up to 35% off published prices, says Priceline. The app will also show hotel descriptions, maps, photos, ratings and the current discount rate.

Priceline SVP Marketing John Caine says that the discounter decided to go after the daily deals market after discovering that 70% of Priceline’s mobile customers were looking for same-day check-ins.

Starting today, 3-star and 4-star rooms will be available via the new service in 34 cities across the U.S., including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Ft. Lauderdale, Honolulu, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York, Phoenix, Portland, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Fe and Washington, D.C. More cities will be added in the future. The Priceline mobile app is available in iTunes and the Android Market.

Update: A top Priceline competitor in this space, Hotel Tonight, has just announced that it’s expanding into 14 more markets from the original 23. Good timing!

Utah rental car shop employee uses Facebook to recover overdue SUV; woman faces theft charge

SALT LAKE CITY
– Authorities in Salt Lake City say a rental car company employee used Facebook to trick a woman into returning a vehicle she stole.

The Deseret News reports ( http://bit.ly/qhpmTO) Jennifer Marshall Hansen rented an SUV from Affordable Rent-A-Car but failed to return it as scheduled on Sept. 1.

The 42-year-old woman from Sandy now faces a second-degree felony count of theft of a rental vehicle. The charge was filed Wednesday in Salt Lake City’s 3rd District Court.

Hansen could get up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Court papers say a company employee “friended” Hansen on Facebook and arranged to meet with her. The papers say Hansen drove the stolen vehicle to the meeting and the employee called police.
